In 1989 the NCCA established the first National Interactive Theatre Troupe (NITT) in Jordan that utilizes a combination of Theater –In- Education developed by drama practitioners and educators in the UK in 1965 and Augusto Boal’s Forum Theatre developed in Brazil.
The troupe comprising of 7 professional performers and trainers is a pioneer in producing plays dealing with contemporary socio-economic development issues, each play is devised based on extensive research, to address a specific issue and to meet desired goals and objectives for a specific age group.
Through compelling stories portrayed by characters who often face challenging life situations that may change their life course to an unknown world of adversities, the plays highlight the dilemma of conflicting values and ideologies and their impact on individuals and society.
The audience is given the opportunity to engage in the subject matter of the play and interact with the actors in role through the facilitator, who acts as the bridge between the audience and the actors. This is a key factor in stimulating spontaneous discussions that can result in a change of attitude and perception. Forms of audience participation include: depictions, simulation, stage pictures and role playing.
Since we believe that theatre is a reflection of life and deals with the complexity of human behavior, most of the original plays produced contain social issues that are relevant to contemporary challenges. The topics include: Gender Equality, Conflict Resolution, Democracy and Human Rights, Intergenerational Dialogue, Early Marriage, Reproductive Health and Rights, Gender Based Violence, Empowering Women in the Work Force and Preventing and Combating Violent Extremism.
The NITT tours nationally and internationally and is able to perform in a multitude of settings from theatres, to schools, to Community Based Organizations, refugee camps and rural areas reaching approximately 100 thousand beneficiaries annually. The Repertoire includes the following plays: “Memoirs of A woman” , “Rising to the Pits”, "Gaza Monologues", “Stop”, “Balance”, “Intersection”, “Ghazil Al Banat” (Cotton Candy), “Paintings on the Wall”, “To Be or Not To Be”, “Mish 3aib” ( Not Shameful), “Full Stop … Begin a New Line!”, “Light”, “Bus Stop”, “The Weakest Link”.
